Keeping a Level Head on Your Shoulders

After learning breath and pelvic control, the next StrongPosture™ exercise is to learn to control the head. Often, when you retrain one part of the body’s motion, something else shifts to compensate. We saw how it becomes harder to balance a weight when it moves out of alignment when we balanced the golf club. Imagine a fifteen-pound bowling ball (about the weight of a human head) balanced on a seven-inch rod (such as the neck). If the ball is shifted forward, it takes dramatically more energy to keep the ball up.

Research studies show that for every inch forward of center the head is balanced, the effective weight of the head being carried by the neck and shoulder muscles doubles!

It’s not surprising that people with forward head posture complain their neck muscles are tired!
